Lab-grown diamonds are real diamonds. Grown in a controlled environment over several weeks using the same atomic structure as mined diamonds, they share every physical, chemical, and optical property — including the certification grades you'd find on a mined stone (cut, color, clarity, carat).
How they're made
Two methods dominate:
- HPHT (High Pressure, High Temperature): replicates the conditions deep in the earth's mantle.
- CVD (Chemical Vapor Deposition): grows the crystal atom by atom from a carbon-rich plasma.
Both produce gem-quality diamonds indistinguishable to the eye and verified identical by laboratory instruments.
Why we use them
- Traceable: every stone has a documented origin (lab, growth date, certification lab).
- Better value: typically 30–50% less than a comparable mined diamond, meaning a larger or higher-grade stone for the same budget.
- Lower environmental impact: no mining, no displaced communities, no conflict-finance footprint.
What they're not
Lab diamonds are not "fake diamonds." They are not cubic zirconia or moissanite. Those are different materials with different chemical compositions and very different optical properties. A lab diamond is a diamond — grown above ground instead of mined from below.
