With basic care, fine jewellery lasts a lifetime. Here's how to keep yours looking the day you got it.
Daily
- Take it off before showering, swimming, or sleeping. Soap residue dulls metal; chlorine pits gold; pillows pull stones loose.
- Apply perfume and lotion before putting jewellery on, not after. Alcohol-based scents tarnish silver and gold over time.
- Store separately — rings against rings scratch each other. The pouch your piece arrived in is the right home.
Weekly
Clean gold and platinum pieces in a bowl of warm water with two drops of dish soap. Soak for 5 minutes, gently brush with a soft toothbrush (especially behind stone settings), rinse, and pat dry with a lint-free cloth.
Sterling silver tarnishes faster — wipe with a polishing cloth weekly.
Annually
Bring your pieces to us (or any reputable jeweller) for:
- Prong inspection — a stone can sit visibly secure with a worn prong about to give. Catching it before it fails saves the stone.
- Professional cleaning — ultrasonic baths get into places a toothbrush can't.
- Rhodium re-plating for white-gold pieces — restores the bright finish that wears off over time.
What to avoid
- Bleach, ammonia, and abrasive cleaners.
- DIY ultrasonic cleaners with fragile or treated stones.
- Wearing rings to the gym — even soft weights leave deep dings in gold.
